K-9s join Massachusetts Police Fire and Explosion Investigation Unit after graduation

VIDEO/PHOTOS: Thursday morning in Bridgewater, seven K-9s went from student to detective! After three months, the friendly and energetic labs are now joining the Massachusetts Police Fire and Explosion Investigation Unit, a process that turns a man’s best friend into their fiercest protector.

“We cannot do our job completely without these K-9s,” said Sargent Gregory Spahl with the Massachusetts State Police Fire and Explosion Investigation Unit. “These dogs come into a fire scene and use the scent cone, use the wind direction, use their noses and are able to identify the exact source of where these items were placed.” Thursday morning, the dogs officially graduated from the training program after completing their final odor recognition test, a time to see if the dogs can use their sense of smell to sniff out illegal fire chemicals. This job that cannot be done without the well-crafted partnership between the lab and their handler.
