Flames tore through a barn on Cumberland Street in Attleboro Wednesday afternoon. Attleboro District Fire Chief Michael Maitland said the barn housed horses.
Maitland said crews and family members rescued multiple horses. One horse died inside the barn.
“There was a lot of smoke coming out and the fire did spread very quickly,” Laura Abrams, who lives in the neighborhood, said. “They’re people that you’d just be proud to know so it’s really terrible that something like this has happened to them.” Officials said the fire was contained to the barn. The barn was deemed a total loss.
Firefighters say narrow roads slowed access, but crews were able to knock down the fire in about 20 minutes. They remained on scene for several hours tending to hot spots. No people were hurt. It is unclear what caused the fire. The fire is under investigation.
