Firefighters from all over the region gathered outside St. Luke’s Hospital in New Bedford Thursday afternoon to greet Lakeville’s Deputy Chief Pamela Garant as she exited the hospital.
“Seeing all these firefighters from different communities show up, it’s pretty moving and it’s pretty special to all of us,” Lakeville Fire Chief Michael O’Brien said. “Fire service is a brotherhood and we all look out for each other.” Garant was injured Sunday while fighting a deadly fire in Middleborough after a chimney fell.
O’Brien told NBC 10 he’s grateful for the swift actions of Middleborough Fire Department Acting Lieutenant Robert Delaney and Middleborough Police Officer Aidan Nemar who rushed in to rescue her.
Garant has been with the Lakeville Fire Department for nearly 10 years, O’Brien said. “She has an incredible work ethic. She’s incredibly intelligent,” he said. “We balance each other out and we work well together and we drive each other nuts most days. I’m looking forward to the day when she comes back.”
One person died as a result of the fire. Multiple others were injured, according to fire officials. The cause has not yet been determined, however investigators said there were no smoke alarms in the home where the fire started.
