Firefighters rescue man 1,000 feet from shore in Lakeville pond, amid high winds

VIDEO/PHOTOS: Lakeville firefighters rescued a kayaker on Tuesday, who was in the water without a life vest over 1,000 feet from the shore. The incident happened while two men were kayaking in Long Pond near Heaven Heights in Freetown, when firefighters said one of their boats filled up with water. Both the Lakeville and Freetown Fire Departments said they received a notification of a “person in the water” around 4:10 p.m. Tuesday. When the second kayaker was unable to assist the man in the water, he paddled to shore to call for help. Firefighters arrived at the scene and quickly deployed a rescue boat, with a combined crew of Lakeville and Freetown firefighters locating the man, who was struggling to stay afloat when he was pulled onto the boat. At the time of the incident, firefighters said winds were gusting at over 30 mph.
