Fire rips through abandoned New Bedford mill building; firefighter injured

PHOTOS: An investigation is underway into the cause of a fire that tore through a New Bedford mill building Tuesday afternoon. New Bedford Deputy Fire Chief Daniel Coons told 12 News firefighters were called to David Street for reports of a fire inside an abandoned five-story mill building.

Flames could be seen shooting from several windows on the third floor as smoke billowed out of the boarded up building. Firefighters also battled flames near the loading dock that had extended up the walls, according to Coons. Coons said one firefighter was transported to St. Lukeโ€™s Hospital to be treated for heat exhaustion. That firefighter is expected to be OK. The cause of the fire remains unknown at this time.
