VIDEO/PHOTOS: Crews worked to put out a fire at 37 George Street in Springfield Thursday morning. Heavy smoke and flames could be seen coming from the top of the home. Springfield Fire Captain Drew Piemonte told 22News that two people are without a home due to the fire and were safely evacuated with no injuries.
The American Red Cross is helping them find a place to stay. Piemonte says that crews arrived at around 3:15 a.m. The Agawam and East Longmeadow Fire Departments assisted to put out the fire. The Springfield Arson and Bomb Squad determined that the cause of the fire was an unattended candle.
The Springfield Preservation Trust states that 37 George Street is a 1896 Colonial Revival Style house designed by architect Frederick Newman for his home. He was the architect for the Court Square Building on Elm Street, the Chicopee Bank Building at Main and Elm Streets, and the Fuller Block at Main and Bridge Streets. The house became a lodging house but was restored in the 1970s.
