Firefighters battled a blaze at a Braintree recycling facility Monday night. A worker Recycleworks employee called in the fire at the 530 West St. facility shortly before 7:30 p.m., said Braintree Fire Chief Freddie Viola.
A baling machine had caught fire, Viola said, and while firefighters were dousing the flames, they found numerous drums that contained a substance that could be flammable in its concentrated state.
The sprinkler system had the fire under control, so firefighters waited until a HazMat team confirmed it was safe to approach and douse the flames, the chief said. The fire apparently started when a conveyor belt malfunctioned and overheated, Viola said. No one was injured in the fire.
