3 hospitalized following Brockton fire

Three people were rushed to the hospital after a fire in Brockton on Saturday. Brockton fire officials say flames broke out at a three-unit building on Grafton Street around 3:40 p.m. and firefighters arrived to find heavy smoke and fire showing on the third floor.

Two people sustained significant burns to their lower extremities and were taken to Massachusetts General Hospital in serious condition, Chief Brian Nardelli said. A third person was also transported to the hospital due to smoke inhalation. It wasn’t immediately clear if those who were injured were building occupants, owners or just working. The fire chief said he didn’t think anyone was currently living at the home.

The cause of the fire is also unclear, but fire officials say it may have been a chemical fire of some sorts, which resulted in fire crews being really careful. The fire itself was knocked down pretty quickly, Nardelli said.
