11 people displaced; dog, bird die after fire at Medford home

VIDEO: Firefighters battled a two-alarm fire Wednesday at a home in Medford. The fire started just after 6 a.m. at the home on Fern Road, according to Medford Fire Department Deputy Chief Tom Brennan. Video from the scene showed thick smoke and flames shooting from the home.

“I couldn’t believe it, you know, it was awful, you know, the flames were all coming up,” witness Maureen Heath said. “The whole back was on fire.” The first arriving companies found heavy fire coming from the back of the home. “One and half story wood frame, fire throughout, three lines working,” Brennan said.

Six children and five adults escaped the fire, officials said. A pet dog and a bird died in the fire. The Red Cross is helping the displaced residents. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
