Two firefighters injured while battling Fairfield house fire

The Fairfield and Benton Fire-Rescue Department said two firefighters sustained injuries while working to extinguish a house fire in central Maine.

Officials said crews were called just before 2 p.m. Saturday to the fire on Ridge Road in Fairfield, and the Somerset Regional Communications Center received multiple calls about the fire. While firefighters were en route, they could see smoke while they were traveling down Western Avenue and struck a second alarm.

Firefighters from Waterville, Winslow, Clinton, Skowhegan, Oakland and Albion responded to the scene to assist Fairfield and Benton fire crews.

According to officials, one injured firefighter was transported to the Thayer Center for Health emergency room in Waterville and was released from the hospital later that day. The other injured firefighter was treated at the scene.

The cause of the fire is being investigated, and officials said it is believed to be accidental.
