Residents in Brunswick got to hear from the company that investigated the firefighting foam leak in 2024.
The Midcoast Regional Redevelopment Authority, which is in charge of the former Navy base in Brunswick, hired Poole Fire Protection to find out what went wrong.
Their “Root Cause” report concluded that a technical fault in an electrical module within a fire suppression system was the cause.
“After a diligent investigation, research, and analysis, it remains unclear what exactly within that module, 22, triggered the actual activation,” said Jack Poole, with Poole Associates.
The incident released more than 1,400 gallons of PFAS-containing firefighting foam concentrate mixed with water, contaminating nearby bodies of water.
