More than 30 residents were safely evacuated from an assisted living facility Wednesday afternoon, according to the South Berwick Fire Department. The fire department said it responded to Berwick Estates around 3:55 p.m. for a fire alarm activation. A call from the facility confirmed a fire in a bathroom, triggering an automatic mutual aid response. Crews arrived within five minutes to find smoke coming from the rear of the building while staff members were evacuating residents, the fire department said. Firefighters searched for remaining residents and helped with evacuations while working to put out the fire. The fire was reportedly confined to the bathroom and quickly extinguished. The fire department says it likely started in the exhaust fan. No injuries were reported. Residents were brought to the South Berwick Community Center during the incident. The Rollinsford Fire Department also responded to the scene.
