The Louisiana Office of State Fire Marshal is investigating two separate house fires over the weekend that claimed the lives of four people.
The first fire happened Saturday morning, Oct.18, at about 7:17 a.m. in the 100 block of Lymon Lane in Hessmer, the fire marshal’s office said. The Hessmer Volunteer Fire Department responded and found three victims: a 58-year-old man, a 47-year-old woman, and a 10-year-old boy, dead at the scene. Investigators confirmed the home did not have a working smoke alarm.
The second fire happened just before midnight Sunday, Oct.19, in the 1100 block of Grinage Street in Houma. A 70-year-old man was killed, and his brother suffered serious fire-related injuries and was taken to University Medical Center in New Orleans, the fire marshal’s office said. The Houma Fire Department responded to the scene.
Both fire departments requested investigative support from the State Fire Marshal’s Office, which is working to determine the origin and cause of each fire.
“These tragedies are heartbreaking and often preventable,” said DPS Principal Assistant Chief Bryan J. Adams. “We urge every Louisiana resident to ensure their homes are protected with working smoke alarms.”
