VIDEO: First responders in St. Landry Parish were honored for their bravery in saving a man from a burning car. The ceremony recognized the deputies and firefighters who rescued Donald Cain after his vehicle caught fire on US 190 in Lawtell.
Cain was severely injured, suffering burns over 30% of his body, and had part of his right leg amputated. Despite these challenges, he expressed his gratitude toward his rescuers, including Capt. Gisha Palmer with the St. Landry Parish Sheriffโs Office, whom he now calls his angel.
โSometimes, this is kind of a thankless job. You know, we see people at their worst. And just to be able to be recognized for, for doing good. It is a really good thing, you know. Again, I’m glad my guys are getting the recognition that they deserve because a lot of times things that we do go unnoticed,โ Chief Matthew Rabalais of St. Landry Fire District No. 3 noted. The event highlighted the often-overlooked efforts of emergency personnel who act swiftly to save lives in critical situations.
