Officials concerned about increased house fires in Louisiana

Home fire safety concerns have grown in Louisiana, as the state has seen more fires this year already than in 2024. As temperatures are set to drop, residents often turn to alternate heating sources, which increases the risk of an outbreak.

Red Cross Executive Director of North Louisiana Karen McCoy says that one’s everyday habits are often the leading causes of a fire in homes. She says that cooking and the use of multiple extension cords can be dangerous if not handled carefully.

McCoy continued, saying it’s essential to stay alert and have a plan, regardless of how safe one thinks they are. Making a plan, having an escape route, and a fire extinguisher all play significant roles in one’s survival.

While often overlooked, there’s one essential device that McCoy says could be the difference between life and death. “The number one thing you could do to help save your life is have a working smoke alarm,” McCoy says. “We definitely want people to test their smoke alarms. We ask that you test them monthly and make sure you’re having a working smoke alarm in your home. That really can cut the chance of death in half.”
