VIDEO: Covington residents gathered Monday at First Baptist Church to honor the life of their beloved fire chief. Fire Chief Gary Blocker, who served the city for 30 years, died last week. Blocker was not only Covington’s fire chief but also the heart of the department for nearly three decades. Hundreds gathered at the church to celebrate his life. His colleagues said his service to Covington was defined by courage, compassion, and commitment.
Blocker spent nearly 30 years rising through the ranks and was known for his leadership and unwavering dedication to Covington. His fellow firefighters say his legacy will last for years to come. “He left a footprint on the fire department in this city and it’s in the shape of a heart. Because that’s where it comes from. Every decision he made and everything he led us to, was from his heart,” Assistant Covington Chief Michell said. A procession was held for Blocker following the funeral. The procession traveled through downtown Covington and in front of the fire department where an American flag was hung in his honor from two firetrucks.
