The City of Ruston announced Tuesday Joe Dan Martin will serve as Interim Fire Chief following the unexpected death of Chief Chris Womack, whose dedicated leadership and service to the Ruston community, the city says will be deeply missed.
In a media release the city says Martinโs appointment as Interim Chief is effective November 24, 2025. Martin currently serves as Assistant Fire Chief.
Assistant Chief Martin brings 26 years of experience in emergency response, personnel management, and public safety leadership, the release says. It goes on to say, in his role as Assistant Fire Chief, Martin has played a central part in daily operations, training initiatives, and long-term planning for the department. His professionalism, deep knowledge, and commitment to the citizens of Ruston have earned him the respect of both his peers and the community.
โJoe Dan has consistently demonstrated outstanding leadership and dedication to the safety of our citizens,โ said Mayor Ronny Walker. โWe are confident he will continue to guide the department with integrity and excellence during this transition.โ
As Interim Fire Chief, Martin will oversee department operations, support ongoing training and development programs, and ensure the continued delivery of high quality emergency services to residents and visitors. The City says it has started the process to name a permanent Fire Chief.
