Bossier Fire Department holds real life scenario firefighter training

VIDEO: Local firefighters are taking their life-saving skills to the next level this week with a special training session in Bossier City.

The Bossier City Fire Department organized a major regional training, bringing together crews from across the area for a multi-day class focused on advanced car rescues, including large vehicles like concrete trucks and school buses.

Intensive make-shift scenario’s were designed to prepare firefighters for worst-case situations they might never see, but need to be ready for. More than 60 firefighters from Benton, Shreveport and Red River Parish and more are participating.

“This training is important because this is something that you don’t typically train onโ€ฆ but something that they can definitely have to deal with in the field. So being that they’ve had experience with it in training, hopefully whenever they encounter it in a real life scenario, everything will translate,” said training officer Justin Kellogg.

Fire crews used the Jaws of Life and other tools to help pry open vehicle doors. One firefighter says this training provides a new level of confidence.

“We learn in real life scenarios that are better help us, you know, in our training in the outside worldโ€ฆ I think it’ll help to serve those citizens a lot better,” said Monroe Townsend, firefighter.

The training ends on Saturday and each firefighter will go through every scenario to prepare them to rescue people from dangerous situations.
