Somerset residents reminded on burning laws following 2 illegal burning incidents

VIDEO/PHOTOS: Two illegal burning incidents in Somerset Sunday prompted fire crews to remind residents of proper burning laws. Crews responded to two separate burning calls Jan. 4. One was located on Holly Hill Drive, where a property owner was burning remnants of furniture beneath an overhead utility line, officials said.

The second incident was reported on the 1600 block of Oak Hill Road, where a tenant was burning an old bed, mattress and other materials, according to officials. Both fires were successfully extinguished without incident, and crews informed the residents of proper burning laws and ordinances.

According to the City of Somerset Burning Ordinance of 2023, residents must notify the Somerset Fire Department before they burn anything. The fire chief or a member of the fire department needs to inspect the materials to be burned, weather conditions and the size of the burn.
