Owensboro Fire Dept recruits train with live burn

VIDEO: The Owensboro Fire Department is making sure their new team members are prepared for any emergency. This was week 3 of training academy for new recruits. Friday, firefighters held a live burn session at their training facility.

The new recruits were sent into a burning building to locate the flames and safely put them out. This past week, officials say recruits have trained on forced entry ventilation and with equipment like the hoses and saws. Battalion Chief Corey Gant says these exercises give them real experience.

โ€œToday is to build confidence with advancement and getting hot and getting used to wearing your gear,โ€ Chief Gant says. โ€œThis gear is 75 pounds between our coat or jackets at our SCPA, so it really is the physical domain thatโ€™s on your body while youโ€™re dragging these hoses down the hallways through peoples houses and it just realize what it takes.โ€

Next week, the recruits will take their training to the next level – putting out a fire while also saving a fake victim. Graduation is 8 weeks away.
