VIDEO: On Tuesday, the 69th baby box opened in Kentucky at the Fairdale Fire Department. The boxes were started in 2015 by Monica Kelsey to give women the option to legally and safely surrender their baby while remaining anonymous.
“This moment represents far more than the installation of just a piece of equipment. Obviously, it reflects our unwavering commitment to protect the most vulnerable,” said Fairdale Fire Department Chief Carrie Blevins.
Louisville Metro Council member Dan Seum added that it was an honor to stand by the community as they supported the cause. “This box represents compassion. It provides a safe, anonymous, judgment free option for parents in crisisโ a chance to protect a newborn when they feel they have no other choice,” he said.
There are now a total of 398 baby boxes located across the country.
