Fire safety concerns rise as deadly blazes hit central, southern Kentucky

VIDEO: Fire departments across central and southern Kentucky are responding to an increased number of deadly fires this winter, with officials expressing concern about more cold weather ahead. Recent incidents include three children killed in a Jackson County house fire, a deadly blaze in Rockcastle County and a home damaged overnight in Lexington.

โ€œThe winter has been steady. Itโ€™s not been a slow season by any means, which is not what we want,โ€ said Assistant Chief Brian Bullock of the Brodhead Fire Department. Many of the fires remain under investigation, but Bullock said he has noticed a pattern in fires around the Brodhead area.

โ€œOne of the trends we have noticed is people using alternate heating methods. We have a lot of people heating their homes with stoves inside, running generators outside, running cords in,โ€ Bullock said.

Firefighters warn that overheating can become a significant problem, particularly when extension cords are plugged into high-voltage devices. Bullock said residents should address electrical problems before they escalate.
