Fire destroys duplex garage in west Wichita

VIDEO: A garage in a duplex was destroyed by fire Tuesday afternoon. Just before 2 p.m., firefighters were called to the 10200 block of W. Merton St. for a reported house fire. When crews arrived, they found heavy flames coming from the garage. Firefighters stretched lines to the garage and front door, containing the blaze to the garage where it started. Smoke managed to get into the attic space of the garage, but not the attic space above the living area. The living area itself sustained some smoke and water damage.

“The interior man-door from the garage to the living quarters was shut and actually locked in this situation, and that door held a barrier to keep the fire contained to the garage,” Battalion Chief Pete Ridder with the Wichita Fire Department said. Two dogs were rescued from the home, and no injuries were reported. The cause and damage estimate are still under investigation.
