‘Blue Mass’ in Overland Park honors first responders and remembers the fallen

VIDEO: Fallen first responders were honored for their sacrifice during the second annual Blue Mass at Queen of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Overland Park. The service is meant to wrap prayers around fallen police officers, firefighters and all first responders, but also shows those currently serving that they have a community backing them. Many community members gathered for the mass to show their love and support. At the front of the church, a table full of candles was lit to honor fallen first responders in Johnson County. Each one of those names was also read out loud.

One of those candles was lit for Darlene Mansfield’s son, Mark David Mansfield. “I love to hear it, I love to hear his name, I love to hear the stories from the fireman whenever I meet someone who knew him or worked with him,” she said, “It kind of brings him back to life.”
