Several pets lost to rural Buena Vista building fire

The lives of several dogs were lost after a fire was extinguished in rural Buena Vista County. The Storm Lake Fire Department was called to 731 550th Street on Monday, Oct. 20, at 10:12 a.m. after receiving reports of a structure fire.

Upon arrival, crews found one of the structures at this address fully in flames with fire spreading to a second outbuilding. According to a press release, mutual aid was requested from the Alta Fire Department. “The second outbuilding had several sections of ceiling removed and hotspots identified via a thermal imaging camera were extinguished,” stated the Storm Lake Fire Department. The Alta Fire Department and Storm Lake Fire Department worked on water operations, salvage and overhaul efforts.

At this time, Storm Lake firefighters and occupants worked together to remove about 10 dogs and several cats from the second structure while crews worked to put out the fire. “Sadly, several dogs were lost in the fire, and we extend our condolences to the owners for their loss,” said the Storm Lake Fire Department. “The cause of the fire remains under investigation.”

Storm Lake firefighters were helped at the scene by the Alta Fire Department, ambulances at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center and the Buena Vista County Sheriff’s Office.
