A house fire in Fort Dodge left several people and animals displaced late Monday night, the Fort Dodge Fire Department said in a press release. Fort Dodge fire crews responded to a reported structure fire around midnight at a two-story residence on 5th Avenue North. Once on scene, the department discovered heavy smoke was coming from the attic.
Firefighters helped rescue multiple people and dogs from the first floor and two residents from the basement. In the end, officials said seven people and six dogs have been displaced due to the fire, which caused “extensive” damage to the attic. No injuries were reported. Officials said easy access to a fire hydrant helped keep the fire under control.
The release stated that the city of Fort Dodge recently ran a Facebook campaign encouraging residents to clear three feet of space around hydrants after the recent snowstorm. Officials said the fire was accidentally caused by an electrical issue in the attic.
