VIDEO: A group of construction workers used a trampoline to save a boy from a burning house in a Glenwood neighborhood on Monday. The fire happened at about 12:30 p.m. near the 200 block of South Vine Street, according to Glenwood Fire Chief Matt Gray.
Three Leick Construction employees happened to be working nearby and saw the house on fire, so they went into the home. They were able to rescue two women. But a boy, who was also the son of one of the other occupants, remained trapped on the upper floor โ so the workers used a trampoline to get the child out, Gray told First Alert 6 on Tuesday.
All three construction workers were injured in the incident, including injuries to the face and eyes. One of them, Gabe Record, was transported to a burn unit in Lincoln. Record and another worker, John Lewis, talked with First Alert 6 on Tuesday about the experience. They said it was all a blur, happening so fast.
โSo I grabbed the trampoline, and me and another friend took and scooted it over to the window,โ Record said. โIt was black smoke, and we got him downโฆ He jumped out the window under the trampoline, and once he hit the trampoline, I got him, and got him away from the building. And we got it up to the side and knew everybody was out at that point.โ
The fire department is planning to honor the three men at a later date. The community is also rallying around the family, who were out at the home Tuesday to go through whatโs left of the house, by holding a donation drive.
