Burn pile may have sparked barn fire outside of Sheldon, officials report

A barn was destroyed in an early morning fire, the City of Sheldon reported on Thursday. According to the city, the Sheldon Fire Department was called at 5:49 a.m. in the 4400 block of 320th Street for a barn fire. The fire was visible from the edge of town, officials said.

Firefighters worked the area, checking for other structure fires, and others began tackling the barn fire. About 7,500 gallons of water were used to extinguish the fire, and traffic was rerouted on Highway 18 due to the incident. The barn, a pickup, and a skid loader are considered total losses. They believe the cause of the fire was ember from a burn pile. No person or livestock were reported injured.

Sheldon Fire, Boyden Fire, Matlock Fire, Sheldon Emergency Management Agency (EMA), Sheldon Community Ambulance Team, Sioux County Sheriffโ€™s Office, Sioux and Oโ€™Brien County EMA, Northwest REC, and Oโ€™Brien County Communication Center were all involved in the emergency response.
