VIDEO: The city of Ankeny has launched its first-ever fire academy this year, welcoming 23 new recruits to bolster its fire department. The Ankeny Fire Academy aims to provide comprehensive training for new firefighters, a shift from the previous method of using task books and station officers for training. As the city grows, the need for a structured academy has become apparent.
“In the past, the city of Ankeny would do more of a task book,” said Dan Schellhase, Deputy Fire Chief of the Ankeny Fire Department. “Now we feel the need to have a full-on academy that we can provide all of the training necessary to do the job functions.”
The Des Moines metro area, including Ankeny, is experiencing growth, leading to an increased demand for firefighters, EMTs, and paramedics. Fire departments across the region are expanding and building new fire stations to accommodate this growth.
Riley Blaylock, a recruit at the Ankeny Fire Academy, expressed appreciation for the opportunity to join the fire department. “Yeah, I have a background in law enforcement. I chose to switch over to the fire department. I’ve always had an interest in being a firefighter-paramedic and, you know, decided finally to take an opportunity and get the qualifications I needed to, to get this job. And I’m very appreciative of it,” said Blaylock.
