Scottsburg Fire Department battles apartment fire

VIDEO: Firefighters battled a fire Tuesday morning in a southern Indiana apartment building. At about 2:30 a.m., Scottsburg Fire Department crews responded to a structure fire at 111 West Cherry Street in Scottsburg, according to Scottsburg Fire officials.

The 15,000-square-foot building was in flames when firefighters arrived on scene. The building was previously a tire shop but has since been converted into an apartment building. Scottsburg Fire Chief James Richey said there is still an “extensive fire” due to a five-foot void area underneath the building where a fire remains active. Chief Richey said when crews first arrived on scene, a wall became compromised, they pulled their units outside, then the wall collapsed. He also said the building had two layers of roofing and the damaged caused the heavier, metal roof to collapse on top of the old roof.
