VIDEO: A portion of I-65 in Bartholomew County and Jackson County was closed for several hours on Tuesday due to a military semi carrying explosive material catching fire. According to the Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Office, I-65 was shut down in both directions just south of Columbus at around 5:30 a.m.
Officials said a military semi caught fire due to a brake failure. It was carrying around 300 howitzer rounds.
The closure spanned several miles of I-65 from exit 55 to exit 64. This is around four miles north of Seymour, according to officials with the Indiana Department of Transportation.
INDOT officials diverted southbound traffic off the interstate and onto State Road 58, while northbound traffic was diverted to State Road 11.
Officials said once the fire was extinguished, they learned about the potentially dangerous military ammunition the semi was hauling.
