The Fort Wayne Fire Department Merit Commission has approved a new plan to expedite the training and hiring of more firefighters, the office of Mayor Sharon Tucker announced Thursday.
Starting in December 2025, fifteen individuals with EMT basic training will enter the Fort Wayne Fire Department training academy and complete their training by February 2026 to become full-time firefighters. An additional 25 recruits will also begin training in December 2025, finishing in May 2026. โThis is a win for our community as we continue our efforts to be the safest community possible and provide excellent services to residents, neighborhoods, and businesses,โ said Mayor Tucker.
Fire Chief Eric Lahey expressed his support for the plan, saying it emphasizes public safety as a top priority. “By working together with the Merit Commission and the Fort Wayne Metro Firefighters IAFF Local 124, this effort positions the fire department and our firefighters in the most effective and efficient manner to provide lifesaving care,” Lahey said. The Fort Wayne Fire Department remains committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of all residents.
