Firefighters Quickly Contain Apartment Fire in Monroe County

PHOTOS: Firefighters from multiple agencies quickly extinguished an early-morning apartment fire Thursday that began on a balcony in the Sudbury Court area, according to the Monroe Fire Protection District.

Just before 6 a.m., crews from the Monroe Fire Protection District and Ellettsville Fire Department Engine 81 responded to reports of a structure fire after a nearby resident, heading outside to their vehicle, noticed flames coming from a neighborโ€™s deck and called 911.

When firefighters arrived, they found active flames on a second-story balcony of a multi-family apartment complex, with the fire beginning to spread along the buildingโ€™s exterior. Due to the size of the complex and the unknown number of residents still inside, additional assistance was requested from the Bloomington Fire Department, which sent an engine and ladder truck to the scene.

Fire crews contained the blaze to the original apartment unit and prevented it from spreading further. Firefighters also conducted searches of adjacent units and checked attic spaces for possible smoke or fire extension. Officers from the Bloomington Police Department and Monroe County Sheriffโ€™s Office assisted with evacuating residents throughout the building.
