Three fire territories in southern Madison County will become one on Jan. 1. The South Madison Fire Territory in a news release issued Friday afternoon announced a merger with the Lapel-Stony Creek Township Fire Territory based in the town of Lapel, and the Adams-Markleville Fire Territory near the unincorporated community of Emporia.
The release said the merger aims to enhance service capabilities by combining resources, personnel and expertise. The goals include strengthening emergency response, eliminating redundancies, and creating a sustainable model for future growth. โThis partnership is about working smarter together,โ said Fire Chief Chris Nodine, emphasizing the benefits of improved response times and expanded coverage for Southern Madison County residents. The fire territories believe residents will see a seamless transition, as fire stations will remain operational and firefighters from all territories will continue to serve their communities as part of the larger, unified department.
