11 displaced, firefighter injured after Indianapolis apartment fire

VIDEO/PHOTOS: Indianapolis firefighters responded to an apartment fire on the city’s southeast side Tuesday morning that displaced 11 people and left a firefighter with minor injuries. Firefighters were called around 10:32 a.m. to the 8500 block of Sierra Ridge Drive, the listed address for The 85Twenty Apartments, in response to a reported fire inside a first-floor apartment.

The occupant told investigators that she was showering when the smoke alarm reportedly went off. She then observed a “heavy volume of black smoke” and proceeded to evacuate. IFD said firefighters arrived on the scene and found heavy flames emanating from the back of the building. As the evacuation process was underway, fire crews helped an occupant from their second-floor apartment. IFD confirmed the fire displaced 11 people. A firefighter received medical attention on the scene after reporting a “slight” injury. The Red Cross will assist the displaced occupants as they begin their search for temporary housing. The exact cause of the fire remains under investigation.
