Woman, 80, in Critical Condition After Chicago Apartment Fire Rescue

VIDEO: A fire broke out in a three-flat apartment building in Roseland Wednesday morning, prompting neighbors to attempt the rescue of a senior woman trapped inside. In the area of 107th & South Calumet Ave., fire crews responded to a blaze that left an 80-year-old woman trapped on the second floor.

The building landlord told WGN-TV that the fire started on the first floor of the three-flat, sometime after 8:30 a.m., quickly spreading through the rest of the apartment building. “The lady was out the window, signaling out the window that she needed help, but couldn’t get out,” neighbor Sheryl Elliot said.

Many took action to save the woman, but faced challenges. “It was too smoky, but there wasn’t much I could do but break the door down,” Elliot added. First responders successfully rescued and later transported the woman to a nearby hospital in critical condition.
