Wabash County train derailment investigation continues

VIDEO: Clean up is underway in Wabash County after a massive trail derailment left two engineers injured. Emergency personnel have set up base at the Belmont Area Fire District as the investigation continues.

โ€œWe found two trains involved,โ€ Belmont Area Fire District Captain Matthew Marriot said. โ€œOne had slipped off the track and made contact with the second. Weโ€™ve had a few small derailments through here but nothing like this.โ€ A colossal scene was found Friday night when officials say 24 Norfolk Southern trains derailed in Browns Illinois, leaving a portion of route 15 shut down between Browns and Belmont. While no civilians were involved, officials say two crew members aboard the train were taken to the hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

โ€œOnce we had a confirmation of the derailment and what was possibly on the train itself, they fully responded efficiently,โ€ Mayor Judge said. โ€œThey had firefighters throughout the whole state of Illinois here.โ€ Bellemont Fire Captain Matthew Marriot says this was an โ€œall hands on deckโ€ situation for many emergency crews in the state. He says two cars leaked molten sulfur which called for more reinforcements including a hazmat team.
