Two displaced, cat rescued from Effingham house fire

VIDEO: Two people are displaced from their home following a Monday night house fire in Effingham. On June 30 at approximately 11:44 p.m., the Effingham Fire Department responded to the report of smoke coming from a residence at 707 Dogwood Ave., according to a release from the department.

Upon arrival, crews saw smoke coming from both the front of the building and garage doors. The Effingham Police Department was the first agency to respond to the scene, and officers attempted to put out the fire using fire extinguishers. However, the officers were forced to evacuate due to heavy smoke conditions. Fire crews then initiated an interior attack and were able to put out the fire in the kitchen using a water extinguisher. This fire was limited to the kitchen area, but smoke damage did still extend throughout the home.
