VIDEO/PHOTOS: Crews will work through the night to clear the wreckage caused by a train derailment in the village of Nora. The Jo Daviess County Emergency Management Agency reports it is coordinating with Canadian National Rail to clear the damaged railcars and rail materials.
According to the Jo Daviess County Sheriffโs Office, 17 train cars derailed just after midnight Oct. 9 at the railroad crossing on North Stagecoach Trail near East Chestnut Street in Nora.
Officials report the 82-car Canadian National train was carrying ethyl alcohol, although a specific amount is unclear. Authorities say hazardous materials from the derailed cars is being removed and environmental monitoring is ongoing.
Residents within 1,000 feet of the incident were evacuated, affecting around 100 people. In an update Thursday evening, officials estimated families will be allowed to return to starting at 6 a.m. Friday morning. The area is still blocked off to traffic to allow crews to work.
