Spouses, partners of first responders finding community in Champaign

VIDEO: Firefighters and other first responders are fighting to keep communities safe every day. While at home, they often leave partners who are hoping they stay safe, which can cause stress.

On Sunday, Champaign firefighterโ€™s loved ones bonded over their experiences and met for their annual Firefighter Spouse Appreciation Brunch. They also welcomed new spouses into the family, giving them a glimpse of what their future can hold and the support their group has to offer.

โ€œItโ€™s just nice to have other families and other spouses that are in the same boat and understand the crazy schedule that we live,โ€ Lisa Rector, a firefighter wife, said โ€œAnd really, the purpose of today is for us to just celebrate each other and the many hats that we wear, and just to be there for each other, support each other, and love on one another.โ€

The City of Champaign Fire Department Spouses and Partners have been doing events for nearly a decade.
