VIDEO: Rockford Fire Station 10, on Rural Street, is moving closer to being relocated after the city council approved an engineering contract for a new site, at the former Magna grocery store lot on East State Street. The current Station 10, located at 3407 Rural Street, is one of the oldest fire stations in Rockford, having been built 67 years ago.
The new location, planned for 3915 East State Street, next to Don Carter Lanes and on the “Miracle Mile,” aims to improve response times and better serve the expanding east side of the city. “[The Rural Street location is] in the middle of a residential area; it’s difficult for those trucks to get out quickly, get onto a major thoroughfare and meet our response time goals throughout the city,” Logistics Chief Matt Cordonnier explained. “Through our study of what response times look like if we relocate the station to [E. State Street], it’s a much more effective response.”
