Peoria Fire Department saves 11 ducklings stuck in sewer

VIDEO/PHOTOS: The Peoria Fire Department is out working hard to protect the community and that includes baby ducks as well. According to a Facebook post, the rescue occurred just before 3 p.m. Friday in the 1000 block of Northeast Adams Street which is in Peoriaโ€™s North Valley. There, the ducklings, 11 in all, were stuck in a sewer drain.

Firefighters on Truck 1 and Engine 1 responded and led by Capt. Brian Hartmann, rescued the baby ducks which, at press time, were in the care of their mother. Later, Hartmann said the entire incident took about 10 minutes and it took more time to get the grate off the sewer than it did to fish out the little ducks. โ€œThe mom was wandering around the sidewalk, quacking away,โ€ he said. โ€œShe had two other ducklings with her and there were the 11 in the drain. She was just hanging out waiting for the others to get out. This isnโ€™t the first time heโ€™s pulled an animal out of a drain. Hartmann said heโ€™s fished a cat out. Ducks, he quipped, are easier as they have โ€œfewer claws.โ€
