Firefighters in the River City look back at a legacy forged over the past century and a half. The Peoria Fire Department held a gathering to mark the milestone. The public was invited for tours, refreshments, and the chance to meet with firefighters. Peoria’s volunteer firefighters were first acknowledged by the city council in 1845 and received their first fire engine the following year. It wasn’t until 1875 that the department was officially established. During the celebration, the department reflected on the heroic rescues, the tragic losses, and the department’s growth, which paved the way for additional services for the city.
Chief Shawn Sollberger said there wouldn’t be a fire department without the ones who stepped up to protect their neighbors. “All fire departments across this whole world started as volunteers. Where do those volunteers come from? They came from the community. There’s such a natural tie between the community and your fire departments because more times than not, they come from your community,” Sollberger said. The open house also served as an opportunity for the public to learn more about fire safety and recognize those who have served over the years.
