Paris FD creates ‘Young Hero Award’ for recipient with courage beyond her years

VIDEO: The Paris Fire Department gave out their first “Young Hero Award,” and it was created because of the quick thinking of one girl. It’s not only what the recipient did to earn the honor, but how young she is that makes it so special.

“I’m so thankful that she was there that day,” Chyane Roberts said. It was a normal shift for Roberts last Tuesday in Paris, when she was babysitting Amelia Fitzgerald.

Roberts was folding clothes when the day took a turn for the worse, and she started having a seizure. “My phone was unlocked, and [Amelia] had grabbed it. She had called my sister,” Roberts said.

Amelia was acting off of pure instinct and courage when she facetimed Robert’s sister. “My sister goes, ‘Is you okay?’ [Amelia] said, ‘No.’ And then she said, ‘Is Chy-Chy okay?’ and [Amelia] said, ‘No,’” Roberts recalled.

Amelia is just two years old. EMS responders said that they’ve never heard of any story quite like this. “You know, this is a job where you see a little bit of something different everyday,” said Hosaid Horizon Health EMS Operations Manager Jesse Lewsader. “I’ve got to say, this is a first one on me.”
