Importance of smoke detectors emphasized after Rockford kitchen fire

PHOTOS: Rockford firefighters are stressing the importance of smoke detectors Tuesday after an overnight house fire that could have been much worse. The Rockford Fire Department says they were called to the fire at a home in the 1500 block of Jackson St. just after 12:30 a.m. Tuesday.

According to firefighters, the man living in the home was alerted by smoke detectors and was able to get out of the home before firefighters got to the scene. A fire had started in the kitchen on the home’s first floor and was brought under control within minutes. No one was hurt in the fire and the cause remains under investigation, though it is believed to be accidental. Damage caused by the fire is estimated at $5,000. Rockford firefighters urge homeowners to test your detectors often and fix them if they aren’t working properly, crediting them with saving countless lives especially in overnight fires.
