Garage fire causes 50K in damage in Springfield, officials investigating

A garage was a total loss, and a house was damaged after a fire in Springfield early Thursday morning. The Springfield Fire Department responded to a home near the intersection of E. Monroe St. and McCreery Ave. around 2 a.m. When firefighters arrived, they found a detached garage was engulfed by flames. Part of the house nearby had also caught fire.

Fire crews immediately began to work on extinguishing the fire. They also searched the garage to make sure no one was inside. No one was hurt. Assistant Fire Chief Julie Plunk said the garage was a total loss, and that some of the houseโ€™s siding had melted โ€” but the people living in the house will not be displaced. Plunk estimated that the fire caused about $50,000 worth of damage. Crews were able to leave the scene around 4 a.m. Now, investigators are working to determine what may have caused the fire. As of Thursday afternoon, the cause of the fire is undetermined.
