Firefighter hospitalized while battling fire that caused significant damage to sports bar in Winthrop Harbor

A firefighter was hospitalized while battling a fire that caused significant damage to part of Timeout Sports Pub in Winthrop Harbor Saturday afternoon, fire officials said. The Winthrop Harbor Fire Department and Winthrop Harbor Police Department responded around 12:30 p.m. Saturday to Timeout Sports Pub, 1706 7th Street in Winthrop Harbor, for a report of a structure fire.

Officers arrived and found part of the roof engulfed in flames with workers trying to extinguish it with a hose. Fire crews arrived and confirmed an active fire coming from the roof of the building, fire officials said. The sports bar was evacuated as well as neighboring businesses. A Working Still Alarm was requested, bringing assistance from neighboring fire departments to aid in extinguishment efforts, fire officials said. Firefighters were able to contain the fire to the roof area but the east dining area sustained significant smoke and water damage.
