Fire department divers, sonar equipment respond after car found fully submerged in pond in Cary

PHOTOS: Fire department divers and sonar equipment responded and searched a pond after a car was discovered submerged in the water in Cary Monday evening, fire officials said. The Cary Fire Protection District responded around 7:40 p.m. Monday to the area of Detroit Street just north of Crystal Woods Circle in Cary for a report of a vehicle in a pond.

Cary Police Department Deputy Chief Scott Naydenoff said a passerby spotted the car and called 911. Fire crews arrived within minutes and located a vehicle that had left the roadway, traveled down an embankment and entered the water, according to Cary Fire Protection District Public Information Officer Alex Vucha. The vehicle was fully submerged and it was initially unknown whether it was occupied. No one saw the vehicle actually enter the water, Naydenoff said. Rescue divers entered the pond and conducted a systematic search — checking the front and rear seats as well as the trunk compartment, Vucha said.
