Fire at Peoria apartment causes $200K; investigation continues

VIDEO: A fire early Monday morning to a Downtown Peoria apartment complex caused $200,000 in damage, the Peoria Fire Department said. According to Battalion Chief Mike Ralston, crews were called to the five-story building, located at 301 NE Jefferson Ave., just after 12:30 a.m.

Most of the fire was contained by the building’s internal fire suppression systems such as an automatic sprinkler. Firefighters entered the affected unit to extinguish remaining active flames and ensure the fire was fully extinguished, Ralston said.

The fire started in one apartment and was limited to that one unit due to the “properly operating sprinkler system and a rapid fire department response,” Ralston said. The fire, he said, appeared to be intentionally set.
