VIDEO: Six firefighters with the Decatur Fire Department are being recognized for their “life-saving efforts” during an apartment fire in February. On Feb. 7, Battalion 1 arrived at an apartment complex on S Church St. and found fire showing from the second-floor window of the multi-story residential building. Upon arrival, smoke was visible from windows on the second and third floors, and four occupants were at a third-floor window calling for help. The crew from Engine 1 attacked the fire while the Truck 1 crew simultaneously deployed a ladder to the third floor to rescue the four people. After the fire was fully extinguished, the Engine 1 crew performed a search and located an unresponsive victim inside.
